ILIA Beauty isn't purely plant-based because they believe that plant-based active ingredients aren't enough for strong performance. Based on this principle, they've developed highly effective formulas containing active skincare ingredients to protect the skin from environmental stressors. One of the most important cornerstones of the line is the foundations with SPF, as this protects the skin and strengthens the active ingredients, making them up to 200% more effective. Without SPF, some skin-protecting ingredients are quickly degraded when exposed to light.

Since ILIA Beauty Clean Beauty journey began in 2011, we have continually worked to push the boundaries of innovation—and the industry.

Sustainability at ILIA Beauty

ILIA Beauty strives for more sustainable packaging by using recycled aluminum, glass components, and responsibly sourced paper. But that's not all—this is just the beginning of a product's life cycle. For ILIA, the end of the life cycle is much more important, ensuring that products don't end up in a landfill somewhere but can be cleanly recycled.

Meet the founder Know Sasha

Born in Vancouver and raised in a rural oceanfront setting just outside the city, Sasha has always had a strong connection to nature. Her younger brother and now business partner, Zac, suffered from acute asthma and allergies as a young child. Their mother, a true pioneer in health and wellness at the time, sought homeopathic remedies to cure her son. This included founding an organic food cooperative with several families in the area, as organic food was not available in grocery stores at the time. Through trial and error, Zac was healed primarily through diet and eventually competed in sailing at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. This was an amazing accomplishment, especially after doctors predicted he would never be able to participate in sports.

Sasha's interest lay in design, and she studied typography in London and New York. In 2006, she moved to Los Angeles and worked for several years as a branding manager in the fashion and beauty industry. After moving to Vancouver for a short sabbatical, her mother encouraged her to read the ingredients list of her favorite lip balm. Sasha was shocked to discover that many of the ingredients were not safe, even though she used the balm daily. She challenged herself to recreate her favorite lip balm in a way that was safe, effective, and natural. And so begins the ILIA Beauty story.
