The maqui berry (Aristotelia chilensis) is an intense purple berry that grows wild in parts of southern Chile. The people who harvest most of the maqui berry are the Mapuche Indians, who are native to Chile and are known as fierce warriors. Maqui berries are very rich in anthocyanins, which are purple pigments with very high antioxidant activity. In particular, maqui berries contain extremely high amounts of anthocyanins called delphinidins. Delphinidins have a strong anti-inflammatory effect and protect the skin from free radical damage caused by pollution and sun exposure.
