Sandalwood has a deep, nutty and earthy aroma with a pronounced woody depth. The history of sandalwood dates back to ancient times when it was used as an oil or incense for spiritual inspiration. The oil is extracted by steam distillation from the branches and twigs of sandalwood trees.

Sandalwood is one of the most valuable essential oils on the market. There are at least five species of sandalwood trees used to produce essential oil, some of which are endangered.

The Eco Project, from which Anima Mundi oils are sourced, will never sell oils from endangered species due to its strong commitment to organic and environmental sustainability. Santalum spicatum, also known as Australian sandalwood, is organically grown and sustainably harvested.

In yoga, sandalwood is associated with the root chakra (first chakra, located at the lower end of the spine) and is said to awaken the Kundalini serpent, i.e. have an aphrodisiac effect. 

Ayurvedic medicine describes sandalwood as bitter, cooling, astringent and soothing. Envelopes with powdered sandalwood and rose water are used as a remedy for inflammation and skin diseases.

Aromatherapy uses the scent of sandalwood to relieve excessive mental stress. The balancing fragrance is said to calm, relieve tension and help to find inner peace. 

Australian sandalwood has a rich, woody, smoky scent with a sweet heart note that complements the balsamic base notes. Sandalwood stays on the skin longer than most oils and has a dry woody aroma once it has solidified. It blends well with any essential oil.

Against a backdrop of questionable extractors, diluents, agricultural toxins and other harmful practices, bringing these small batches of oils from extremely rural areas to you is no easy task.
